Smart Steel Technologies participated in STEELSIM 2025, a conference for the global steel industry. Our presence was highlighted by a significant presentation that detailed our latest advancements in steel production optimization.
Vladimir Finkelshtein (PhD), delivered a presentation on "Using Edger for Batch Planning of Continuous Casting – Challenges and Solutions." His talk focused on how batch planning, a common strategy for simplifying material handling and production planning, can be effectively introduced to the scheduling of continuous casting for flat steel. This is achieved through the careful use of the hot strip mill's edger.
The presentation underscored that while the benefits of this optimization are considerable, it introduces new challenges for planners. These challenges are similar to those that arise from other process changes requiring adjustments to planning rules. To fully leverage such optimizations in complex manufacturing environments, Dr. Finkelshtein emphasized the critical need for automated assistance, specifically using Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) solvers. This approach demonstrates Smart Steel Technologies' commitment to developing intelligent solutions that address the steel industry's most complex planning problems.
